Managing Our Environmental Impact

Supporting the transition to a low carbon future

From reducing our emissions, to empowering our people, clients and customers to make lower emission and more sustainable choices, we're playing an active role in supporting the transition to a low carbon future.

We are building an ecosystem of partners that align to our sustainability ambitions and our organisational values, and will help us expand our offering of affordable, accessible and impactful products and services for customers and clients.

Our partnerships with environmental not-for-profit organisations are also helping to deliver positive environmental and biodiversity outcomes through restoration and revegetation projects across Australia.

Our commitments to managing our environmental impacts and contributing to an inclusive, healthier and low-carbon future are detailed in our Sustainability Strategy 2028: An Empowered Future.

Our Environment Policy also provides an overview of our environmental management approach and activities that support the delivery of our environmental commitments.  Find out more here.

Our environmental partners

Greenfleet

Greenfleet is an environmental not-for-profit organisation that plants legally protected biodiverse native forests to restore ecosystems, grow wildlife habitat and deliver climate action. Since 2008, Smartgroup customers have donated over $14.5 million to Greenfleet, contributing to approximately 920,000 tonnes of carbon being sequestered over the life of the forests. These donations have been invested into restoring a number of sites across Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria, including the Strzelecki Nature Link project on Boonwurrung Country, in South Gippsland, which is creating a 3.5km stretch of contiguous protected koala habitat.

Carbon Positive Australia

Carbon Positive Australia restores cleared and degraded land by planting native trees and shrubs that are local to the area.

Currently, 100% of donations go towards restoring 1350 hectares of cleared bushland at Eurardy Reserve in Western Australia back to its former natural glory. Since 2020, Smartgroup customers have donated over $2.7 million to Carbon Positive Australia, contributing to approximately 160,000 tonnes of carbon being removed from the atmosphere.
